Apr 1st 2009 Is Real Wood Furniture Still Fashionable?

We are living the century of engineered materials. From the laminated floors which replaced successfully the hardwood ones, to the MDF and PAL boards kitchen cabinets or even living furniture, everything seems to be engineered around us. However, since the shapes and colors are so beautiful and unexpected, many of us just adapted to this new style and design for our homes and we feel good. If we think how well the modern kitchen appliances can integrate into the furniture as a whole, we realize the beauty of this modern style which became more affordable over the past few years.

Yet, there is a category of furniture shops clients who still dream of old times fashion, and who value real wood furniture more than all modern materials, no matter how easy they are to maintain and to integrate in a living space. Indeed, there are people who long after the classic bookcase we all know from our grandparents’ houses. They simply love those compartment chests which smell like cinnamon and which release a dream each time you open one of the drawers. Or those wooden writing desks which remind us of Sherlock Holmes, are they already dead and buried? Maybe not.

Modern furniture stores like Ikea or Kika offer a wide range of unfinished furniture, thus giving nostalgics a chance to decorate their home they way they like. Manufacturers like Archbold Furniture Company, Arthur W Brown mfg, Bridgetown Furniture, Catskill Craftsmen Inc, Whitewood Industries or Whittier Wood Furniture are ready to please their customers with amazing models of real wood furniture which fits all shapes and sizes of rooms.

The varieties of wood are diverse, as to meet as many tastes as possible. From beech to alder, from birch to maple or oak, all wood essences are presented in spectacular natural colors and shades, ready to be brought home and given the final touch of lacquer or paint. When combined with rattan or wicker storage baskets, these storage furniture items can look great even if they are left just as they are, unfinished, with only a taint of transparent varnish to prevent dirt from accumulating in the wood fiber.

Real wood furniture is usually either crazy expensive or very cheap. If you buy luxury furniture items, you can spend many thousands of dollars for each of your rooms. The same rule applies if you buy antiques. Vintage style requires big budgets. Not to mention that if the furniture needs restoration, you’ll probably spend a fortune, because craftsmen who do this klind of work are very rare nowadays. The cheap wood furniture is this unfinished one: buy it, take it home, finish it as you like and you’ll have original pieces to expose in your rooms for your guests’ pleasure and comfort.
